Eden Hazard believes he can be as good as Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo

EDEN HAZARD believes he can reach the levels of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo - but needs to score more goals to do so.

The Chelsea ace has been in superb form this season, scoring 12 goals in all competition.

Hazard reckons he can continue to improve and reach the same level as the world's elite players.

He said: "Last season was very good but this season for me has been on a different level because I’ve been more consistent.

"I’ve played almost every game, almost every minute of every game, with the same intensity. I’ve created lots of chances and scored goals.

"If I want to reach the next level I have to score more, I know that, but I’ve taken pleasure on the pitch this season and I’m happy with the level I’ve reached.

" Hazard, who has started every league game this season, is happy with his role in the Jose Mourinho's side.

He continued: "My role is always the same. When I get the ball I have to create something

"It’s easier when you keep the ball and when you play against a team that defends a lot, especially at home. But it’s also difficult because you have to find space.

"When we counter-attack it’s a little bit different because I have to defend more but then as soon as I get the ball I immediately attack.

"You have a bit more space and a bit more freedom going forward."

Neymar to be Enjoyed, not Criticised, Says Barcelona Boss

Neymar scored twice as Barcelona won 3-2 midweek at the Vicente Calderon to progress into the semi-finals 4-2 on aggregate. However, Neymar was targeted by Atletico Madrid players in an ill-tempered affair as the hosts finished the game with just nine men.

Madrid: Barcelona boss Luis Enrique has leapt to the defence of Brazilian star Neymar after claims from Atletico Madrid players he was showboating as the Catalans knocked the Spanish champions out of the Copa del Rey in midweek.

Neymar scored twice as Barca won 3-2 on the night at the Vicente Calderon to progress into the semi-finals 4-2 on aggregate.

However, Neymar was targeted by Atletico players in an ill-tempered affair as the hosts finished the game with just nine men.

Enrique admitted after the match that he had substituted Neymar in the second-half to protect him from further rough treatment.

And he believes players of Neymar's ability should be afforded more protection rather than being questioned for showing their full repertoire of skills.

"Brazilians see football as a way of enjoying themselves whilst competing," Enrique said on Saturday.

"Spain is a strange country where people are more offended by a nutmeg than destroying someone with five fouls.

"If you take football, samba or other things away then he is no longer Brazilian. They have another way of understanding the game. He should continue to enjoy it and so should we.

Neymar's run of seven goals in his last six games has played a major role in Barca's upturn in form since losing their opening game of 2015 away at Real Sociedad.

However, they face another of the form teams on Sunday night when Villarreal hope to extend their 18-game unbeaten league run at the Camp Nou. The sides will meet three times in just over a month as they also clash in the Copa del Rey semi-finals, and Enrique insisted his side have to disrupt Villarreal's passing game.

"Both of us are in good form. At home we are very strong and the support of the fans is important, but I have no doubt they will present difficulties.

"We need to press well. In the first game there we struggled and won late on. We need to be very effective in our pressing."

Barca's Balogun Hails Lionel Messi After Training With First Team

Boluwatife Balogun is inching closer to making his official debut for the first team of Barcelona.

He recently trained with the senior squad of the La Liga powerhouse for the first time since arriving the club from Lens.

Despite manager Luis Enrique voicing his satisfaction with the performance of Balogun, the highly rated starlet is refusing to get carried away, as he's aware that he needs to keep working harder to break into the first team.

''I trained with the first team last Friday, that's how it's being done once in a while, '' Boluwatife Balogun said to SL10.ng.

''Training with Barcelona first team is a dream come true, but playing with them in an official match will be awesome.

''The coach applauded us after the training session. It was my first time of training with the first team, and as footballers we do get nervous at times.''

The attacking midfielder has nothing but praise for Barcelona poster boy Lionel Messi, after he was mesmerized by the skills of the Argentina international during the practice session.

''I have been coming across Barcelona stars, but I was closer to my role model Andrés Iniesta.

''Lionel Messi...., I have not seen any player that can be compared to him. He is a very good role model for many players out there.

''My target with the Juvenil A squad for the rest of this season is to win every title we play for,''

Balogun concluded. Boluwatife Balogun has been at La Masia Academy for the past two years, and he has opted to represent Nigeria at international level, ahead of France and Holland.

Barcelona Locker Room Reportedly Upset at Jérémy Mathieu

After the loss at the Anoeta, the world found out that the relationship between Lionel Messi and Luis Enrique was not the best, which resulted in a crisis that is thankfully part of the past now. But, as always, #TheCrisis returned because of something somebody said. But, surprisingly, the guy putting more gasoline on the fire is an inside source.

A few days ago, 31-year-old center-back Jérémy Mathieu revealed during a radio interview that Messi and Enrique actually had a heated discussion before the match against Real Sociedad. It happened during a training session, when Leo went after Lucho for a hard tackle from a teammate that wasn't called a foul. Enrique then gave a surly response and they had to be separated before things got even more heated.

The revelation of an actual beef between the team's best player and the coach was the last thing that needed to happen after the two reportedly forgot the problem and didn't let it affect their professional relationship. Thanks to seven straight wins by the Blaugrana,
Mathieu's remarks didn't cause much problem externally, but they didn't go well internally. Enrique, Messi and the rest of the captains have not talked to Mathieu since the interview, sources told Barça Blaugranes.

It's unclear to this point whether Enrique will punish Mathieu in some way, but the most discrete way would be to leave him out of the squad for tomorrow's La Liga encounter with Villarreal. He hasn't shown much improvement on his physical condition even though he has received the medical green light, so excluding him from the lineup under the official label of "medical reasons" would be the easiest way for Enrique to show Mathieu he's not happy with the player's actions.

Arsenal Sent David Ospina To Barcelona For Medical Treatment

Arsenal sent David Ospina to Barcelona for treatment after their own doctors failed to find the problem with the keeper themselves.

The Gunners found Ospina to be a guiding light for the defensive line-up when Wojciech Szczesny fell out of favour with Arsene Wenger, but when he arrived at the Emirates he was not at his best, suffering from a knee injury.

And according to Metro, the Columbian was unable to have the problem diagnosed correctly at Arsenal, so as a result he was eventually sent to Barcelona for the Catalan team doctors to tend to him there.

It's another piece of negative news for the Gunners' medical team who have been criticised on many occasions for their handling of players injuries.

Jack Wilshere has in particular fallen victim to a number of problems in his time at the club and it would appear that over recent years the north London side has had more issues than other big-name clubs and regular Champions League competitors with keeping their players fit.

When Mesut Ozil succumbed to an injury in October last year, Wenger was forced to defend his club doctors, telling reporters at the time: "We have to consider every injury individually. Most of the injuries we've had are joint problems and accidental problems and there are post-World Cup traumatic injuries.

"The only muscular problems we have had consistently this year are Arteta and Ramsey. Ramsey is quite surprising because he's young and has good stamina and we haven't really found out why.

"Let's not forget, we've played eight Champions League games since the start of the season and when your bodies are not really prepared and you go Wednesday night to Besiktas and Saturday to Sunderland, it's demanding.

"Is that the only explanation? I don't know but I cannot deny that we've had more injuries than planned."

Arsenal and Barcelona enjoy a particularly friendly relationship and the clubs have been known to help each other out in the past, particularly with transfers.

But this isn't news that Gunners fans want to hear as they side fight to get back into the top four and will likely finish the season without a title for the 11th year in a row.

Sergio Busquets to Sign Contract Extension with Barcelona

One of the most consistent pieces of Barcelona's glorious era, Sergio Busquets is set to have a new contract.

According to a report from Mundo Deportivo, the Blaugrana and the 26-year-old midfielder will sign an extension that will keep him as a Barça player until 2020, with a player option for one extra season. Busquets will also see his bank account get bigger with a significant increase in his wages. Plus, it will get tougher to buy him out of Barça, with his release clause getting raised from €150 million to €175 million.

Despite his consistency and high level of play year after year, Busquets is always a controversial figure in the eyes of Barça fans. Some point to his lack of defensive skills; others point to his lack of passing skills; others point to his lack of offensive skills; however, the reality is Sergio is one of the more complete players in his position in all of football. Being forced to cover a lot more ground due to Luis Enrique's crazy new tactical system, Busquets took some time to adjust to his expanded defensive role, but has now settled into a rythm and has returned to his usual All-Star form.

Busquets is getting paid, and few players in the current Barça squad are more deserving than him.

Forget Picasso or Dali, FC Barcelona's museo is the cool place to visit

January 30 – Barcelona, one of the two giants of Spanish club football, are claiming that the FC Barcelona Museum has again won the title of most visited in Catalonia, outpulling museums devoted to the famous painters Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dalí. An item on the www.fcbarcelona.com website says that its museum, which marked its 30th anniversary last September, attracted 1,530,484 visitors in 2014 – up 1.62% on a year earlier. By comparison, it notes, the Dalí Museum in Figueres was visited by just under 1.3 million people, with the Picasso Museum in Barcelona getting just under 920,000 visitors. A tour of the club's famous stadium and the museum, marketed under the label "The Camp Nou Experience", is priced at €23, with concessions for children and over-70s. Assuming an average entry fee of €20, the Experience would have generated more than €30 million in 2014 in ticket sales alone, the cost of a pretty decent squad member. According to the club, visitors have included managers from the Roland Garros tennis museum in Paris who, it says, were on "a fact-finding mission".

Barcelona ace Xavi gives Man Utd, City and Chelsea hope over future Lionel Messi transfer

BARCELONA midfielder Xavi admits the spat between manager Luis Enrique and star forward Lionel Messi could happen again - but that doesn't mean Messi will be sold.

Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea were all ready to swoop in for the disgruntled Messi, valued at around £200million.

Chelsea, in particular, looked a likely destination for the Argentine ace and his agent was recently blamed for the deal falling through. Messi was fuming at Enrique during a training-ground bust up earlier this month and results showed as Barcelona restarted their Liga campaign after the winter break with a defeat to Real Sociedad.

But Xavi has cooled water on lingering tensions between the pair, although he believes they may lock horns again in the future.

"It's all quite understandable, it's no big deal,

" Xavi said. "From within the group, we give it the importance it deserves, which is zero.

"It happened and it's history. And I'm sure it will happen again.

"You have to treat it with the importance it deserves: zero.

" Xavi also insists that Barca can improve ahead of their return to Champions League action next month as the club ride on the back of seven straight wins.

He said: "The results have changed. If we had won at Anoeta even 2-1, we would be leaders. Results change everything here. It's a shame but it's true. We weren't so bad before and we're not so good now. We're on the right track."

Singer Shakira gives birth to second child in Barcelona: reports

MADRID (Reuters) - Colombian pop star Shakira has given birth in Barcelona to her second child, a boy, Spanish media said on Friday.

The singer and her boyfriend, Spanish soccer player Gerard Pique, had their first child, a son named Milan, in 2013.

Shakira, 37, and Pique, 27, met in 2010, but only confirmed that they had been in a relationship in March 2011.

The "Hips Don't Lie" singer, one of the best-selling Latin pop idols, gave birth in Barcelona's Teknon clinic, local media said, though the hospital said it could not confirm the information. Pique is a defender for Spanish La Liga team FC Barcelona.

As with the birth of their first child, the couple recently asked fans in an online baby shower to buy gifts such as fresh water kits and vaccines to help needy children. Shakira is a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador.

Villarreal, Bilbao & Espanyol join Barca in Copa semifinals

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — Villarreal won 1-0 at Getafe to advance to a Copa del Rey semifinal against Barcelona on a 2-0 aggregate score on Thursday.

Athletic Bilbao will meet Espanyol in the other semifinal.

Villarreal entered with a 1-0 lead from the opening leg and held Getafe in check until striker Gerard Moreno sealed its place among the final four teams with a goal in the 78th minute.

Barcelona knocked out Atletico Madrid on Wednesday. The Catalan club will host Villarreal at Camp Nou on Feb. 11.

"We have reached the semifinals for the first time in the history of Villarreal," coach Marcelino Garcia said. "We are now two games from the final and face a very difficult rival, who is maybe playing at its best. But nobody can take away our excitement."

Joel Campbell debuted for Villarreal after his arrival from Arsenal on loan.

Bilbao eliminated Malaga thanks to Aritz Aduriz's goal three minutes after halftime for a 1-0 victory after they drew without goals in the opening leg. Aduriz tapped in Markel Susaeta's pass to cap a quick attack started from a goalkick.

Espanyol moved on despite a 1-0 loss at Sevilla, advancing 3-2 over both legs.

Espanyol left back Anaitz Arbilla curled a free kick off the crossbar for Espanyol's best scoring chance just two minutes after kickoff.

The Barcelona-based side then withstood Sevilla's constant push until substitute Diogo Figueras struck with a long-range shot two minutes from time

Who is the Most Influential Person in FC Barcelona’s History?

With over 115 years of club history, picking a single individual is tricky but there are a few candidates that stand out from the rest.

 Joan Gamper

Where better to start than with the man who started the club. Gamper was a swiss businessman who founded many clubs in his homeland including FC Basel and FC Zürich, in 1898 he traveled to Barcelona. The city was meant to be a layover on his journey to Africa but Gamper fell in love with the Catalan capital. He stayed and on the 22nd of October 1899 he placed an advert in Los Deportes, stating his intention to form a football club. A group of Swiss, British and Spanish football fans responded to the advert so they met at the Gimnasio Solé on the 29th November and FC Barcelona was born.

Gamper started as club captain and a member of the board before being elected president in 1908. During his presidency, Barcelona started to become a dot on the footballing calendar. He established the club's first stadium, signed legendary player Paulino Alcántara and is widely credited for being president during Barça's first "golden age".

Despite the tragic end to his life in 1930, Gamper is still a familiar name to any Barça fan thanks to the annual Joan Gamper Trophy. Gamper also has a street named after him in the Les Corts district and his membership number has been retired. Although many influential men have come to the club since Gamper, there can be no denying that without him this club wouldn't be what it is today.

 Johan Cruyff

"If the 175,000 FC Barcelona members, or socios, queued up in an orderly line, night after night, to massage his tired feet, cook his dinner and tuck him into bed; if they carried his golf clubs round Montanya's hilly 18 holes; if they devoted 50 per cent of their annual salary to him ... it still wouldn't be anywhere near enough to repay the debt that those who love this club owe Johan Cruyff"
                                                                                                                                 Graham Hunter

When talking about Barcelona's success, it is hard to have a conversation without including Cruyff's name. A lot is talked about Barça's DNA, about the kids who come through La Masia, all of this stems from Cruyff. He changed the idea that small footballers are useless, not only that but he convinced the world that they were the way forward.

The Dutchman began his career at Ajax, winning eight league titles and three European cups. Barcelona came calling and he won European Footballer of the Year in his debut season along with the league title. After he hung up his boots he returned to Ajax as coach before again switching the windy city of Amsterdam for the heat of Barcelona.

He set about assembling the dream team. Cruyff brought in Txiki Begiristain, Ronald Koeman, Michael Laudrup, Romário, Hristo Stoichkov and Pep Guardiola. Barça won four league titles in four years and reached the pinnacle of European football by winning the club's first European Cup at Wembley.

For any other manager this would be the showpiece of their career, the best thing they ever achieved. But for Cruyff, the trophies come a mere second. His greatest work was the creation of La Masia. Cruyff's brainchild of establishing a fully-functioning youth system that parallels the ideologies of the first team was an idea that has benefited the first team since its creation 36 years ago.

No Xavi, no Iniesta, no Valdés, no Busquets, no Messi without Cruyff. All of these world beaters were formed in La Masia and without Cruyff they would've been deemed too small, not strong enough for the physical game.

Cruyff revolutionised Barça's philosophy. He set the wheels in motion for the plan that would see Messi, Iniesta, Xavi et al under Guardiola's guidance become one of the greatest teams to ever play the game.

 Pep Guardiola

When Guardiola's promotion from B-team coach to the first team was announced, there was understandably doubts. This was a man with only a year's coaching experience under his belt being given one of the biggest jobs in world football.

The story of his appointment is a familiar one to most culés. The board faced a decision between Guardiola and José Mourinho, they chose Pep and the next four seasons was the most successful era of the club.

Guided by Cruyff's philosophies, he installed a new team ethic, reintroduced a total football like style of play and showed an unrelenting desire to win. League titles followed as did Copa del Reys and two Champions Leagues along with plaudits claiming this to be the best team the game had ever seen.

Guardiola's influence was most noticeable after he had left the club. The team retained the league but have since had a new manager every season and haven't been able to replicate the success they enjoyed under Pep's leadership. While it's true that the players were naturally going to decline, the absence of a skilled man motivator and tactician such as Guardiola is paramount.

The evolution of Bayern Munich from a counterattacking side to a possession based one is a key example of the kind of impact the Catalan coach can have in a short space of time.

 Ronaldinho

"Playing for FC Barcelona was my magic moment"

- Ronaldinho The Brazilian superstar was the iconic player of Frank Rijkaard's reign and the team was formed around him. A man who was originally bought as a consolation prize for the loss of David Beckham to Real Madrid, quickly established himself as one of the best players to ever wear the shirt.

During his time in Catalunya he won two Ligas, one Champions League, two Spanish Super Cups and three Catalan Cups. However what speaks most of his greatness was being applauded by the Santiago Bernabéu crowd during a 3-0 victory in one of the most memorable Clásico moments of all time.

While Ronaldinho can't claim to have reformed the club from the ground up, he is a true superstar and the tactic to run the team through him was a blueprint that opened doors for Messi.

 Lionel Messi

"Don't write about him, don't try to describe him. Just watch him." - Pep Guardiola

When you are riding a wave, it is impossible to fully understand the size of the wave until it is finished. This is the perfect analogy for Messi's career. Most players are finally accepted into the pantheon of the greats after their playing days are over, it shows how good Messi is that he is already being considered as possibly the greatest ever at the tender age of 27.

There is no doubt that Messi has already had a huge impact on the game. Winning four consecutive Ballon d'Ors, becoming Barcelona's, La Liga's and the Champions League's all-time top scorer was unlikely to go unnoticed. His influence has spread across the world and we now starting to see kids professionally playing and citing Messi as their role model.

The true measurement of Messi's influence is unlikely to be clear for a few decades yet. When we see kids growing up imitating Messi and those kids going on to play on the world's biggest stages then we will start to understand the phenomenon that is Leo Messi.

 Other Notable Candidates:

 Xavi Hernández
 Rinus Michels
 Hans Gamper

Ladislao Kubala From looking at the list, it becomes increasingly clear that Cruyff stands head and shoulders above the rest. It was his idea that revolutionised the Barça style and has since become the blueprint for their success. While we are yet to see the full extent of Guardiola's or Messi's influence, for now only Cruyff can boast such an influence in the club's history.

Atletico Madrid 2-3 Barcelona: Neymar, Torres, red cards and chaos

Dazed and confused, at the final whistle one question got asked repeatedly: what the hell happened? The answer was simple even if the analysis wasn't: pretty much everything happened. Fernando Torres scored after 38 seconds and Neymar scored after eight minutes. There were 11 yellow cards, five goals, two penalties and two reds, not that anyone realised: the first of them whipped out and waved in the players' tunnel at half time. Jordi Alba was felled by a flag. And Arda Turan threw his boot at the linesman. Oh, and Barcelona went through to the semifinal of the Copa del Rey.

And all that in under an hour. Arda sent his boot flying just three minutes into the second half. He didn't get sent off. By then, Gabi had gone and so had Antoine Griezmann. Diego Simeone had taken him off; it would take Luis Enrique a little longer to take off Neymar. He survived another 25 minutes; "survived" is definitely the word. It was already 3-2 to Barcelona, 4-2 on aggregate, at half-time. "We have to play every minute as if it was the last," Simeone had said before the game yet the last minute was the 46th, with the players heading to the dressing room. Gabi's red card ended it, Simeone said. "In the second half we played the way you saw: with no ambition to attack. We did what we think is right for the future of the team," Simeone added.

There was little that could be done about the score now, but a few scores were settled and much happened. It wasn't the same, though. The first half had been "fabulous," Simeone said.

He was right too: Atlético versus Barcelona was a game not to be missed; just don't tell Cristian Ansaldi that. He had intended to go but ended up spending most of the night down at the police station instead. The Atletico Madrid full-back, unavailable on Wednesday night due to injury, was arrested when he tried to pass a police road block on the way to the ground and got into an altercation with an officer, which allegedly ended with him catching the policeman's hand as he went to shut his car door. He left the police station just after one a.m. having missed all the fun.

And now, the morning after the night before, it's time to pick through the rubble.

Fernando Torres, supersonic

Fernando Torres scored 46 seconds into the first half against Real Madrid in the last round. He scored again 38 seconds into the second half against Real Madrid in the last round. Here, he scored after 38 seconds against Barcelona. Three goals in two minutes and two seconds and from only three shots. Really.

Torres' goal last night came from his third shot since joining Atlético (a statistic that may actually concern Simeone almost as much as it pleases him) and he fell to the floor, kissing the turf. Seven and a half years later, the Kid was home. He'd knocked out Real Madrid; now his goal had swiftly put Atlético on course to knock out Barcelona.

 The world turned upside down

They scored three goals at the Vicente Calderón: two came from quick, direct counter-attacks, springing from deep and racing into space while the other came via a header from a corner. Nothing unusual there, except that "they" is not Atlético Madrid; it was FC Barcelona. And there could have been more too: Neymar ran clean through, only to be (wrongly?) pulled back for offside. This was a game where the roles were reversed, the styles swapped.

Although the idea that Barcelona never played on the counter-attack with Pep Guardiola is wrong, he did sometimes appear to be on a mission to play as many midfielders as he could: the World Club Cup final, where Barça lined up in a kind of 3-7-0 formation, was the ultimate expression. Here, Barcelona played almost without midfielders: Andres Iniesta in particular could only watch the ball fly over his head. His form this season and the way he fits into a new side with a new style is a significant issue to be tackled.

Playing more directly isn't necessarily a bad plan when you have Lionel Messi, Neymar and Luis Suárez up front. Besides, there were other reasons too: the pitch, which Simeone had warned was in bad condition, was bouncing up "like a rabbit" in Luis Enrique's words, and Atlético pressed high, pushing Barcelona back. That may have made them uncomfortable but it also meant that the release, a longer ball to break the lines of pressure, opened up the counter-attack. It was striking just how high Atlético's defence pressed; when Neymar was sent through, he had run from the halfway line. The pass, by the way, had come from Marc-Andre ter Stegen and it was impeccable.

Even after Atlético scored they pressed high when, at 1-1 on aggregate, they might have expected to play less openly, defending deeper and looking to counter-attack. A word for here Jordi Alba, too: he blocked Griezmann's goal-bound shot near his own six-yard box with his hand and then reached Messi's pass to provide the assist for Neymar to score the third 11 seconds later and 90 metres away.

Barca's personality reveals itself The photo that appeared on Twitter of the Barca players celebrating the victory on their way home was eloquent; the fact that so many players posted the very same picture even more so. This was a big victory and one that will help bring them together -- the "team that is united wins games" idea sometimes needs inverting -- while also revealing a competitive personality that is a significant advance on last season.

Last year, Barcelona played Atletico Madrid six times and did not beat them. They were knocked out of the Champions League by Atlético, lost the league title to them in their own stadium and only scored three goals against them all year. They never looked like winning in any of those games and hardly looked like competing.

Now they have beaten Atlético three times in three weeks, scoring seven times. Twice they have put three past Simeone's side. On the final day of last season, Barcelona's 1-1 draw with Atlético Madrid saw them relinquish the title with little more than a shrug, as if it was somehow inevitable. There wasn't even much protest when Messi had a goal disallowed that would have made them champions. It was as if they were resigned to it. Not now. Now they are rebelling.

Neymar's mischief

The Brazilian had been involved in confrontations in the first leg and was again involved in the second leg. At one point, Juanfran held seven fingers up to him, an attempt to wind him up over Brazil's humiliating defeat against Germany at the World Cup (because Spain were so much better). He and Fernando Torres had gone for Neymar at the half-time whistle, too. "Neymar does some things that there is no need for, especially when you're winning," Gabi said later.

"If Neymar carries on like this, one day he will have a problem," said Cani. He could have had problems here. Neymar departed the first game with a bloodied ankle; he could have left Wednesday night's with worse. "It was getting a bit ugly so we took Neymar off," Luis Enrique said. "Normal tackles are one thing, but it seemed to be becoming something else." Every time he got the ball, the whistles grew; every time he was taken out, there were cheers. But Neymar never hid; in fact, he grew. Instead, he kept taking people on, kept asking for the ball and kept taking responsibility; the more others lost control, the more in control he appeared.

There was an element of winding opponents up in that but Sergio Busquets defended Neymar, insisting that flicks and tricks are just the way he plays. And the bottom line, apart from asking why he shouldn't bamboozle those who try to kick him or even give a bit back, is that he was brilliant. And brave. He scored two goals, the second beautifully taken, and now has 21 this season. For much of this game, Neymar had the ball. He also had balls.

How about that ref...!

After the game, Gabi claimed that he had got his second yellow card and thus been sent off at half time for saying: "Jesús, it was a penalty and a red card." Note the accent on the ú. This was no insult and no blasphemy either; Jesús is the referee's name. It might have been hard to believe Gabi's version of events except that the referee's report seemed to confirm it. Gabi had been sent off for pointing his finger and making an "apreciación técnica." And right there, a brilliant cup tie ended.

Incidentally, substitutions are announced at stadiums so shouldn't red cards be too? Gabi was sent off at half-time, down the tunnel and out of sight, but no-one knew. (And, yes, that includes journalists). It took a few minutes for fans to realise that Atlético had started the second half with ten men. When the penny did finally drop, the chants began. "Hands up! This is a robbery." It was about then that Arda Turan threw his boot at the linesman, an act which, let's be honest, mostly made everyone laugh.

Turan only got a yellow card. The referee's report says that he threw that boot off the pitch -- not at the linesman -- as a sign of disagreement with a decision. And the referee's report is always right... even when it's wrong.

Luis Suarez is still proving his class

When Barcelona shelled out another eye-watering transfer fee to secure the services of Luis Suarez, especially in light of his actions at the World Cup, eyebrows were raised.

Such an outlay on a player that wouldn't be able to play in earnest until the end of October seemed a spectacularly short-sighted view from Barca's hierarchy.

The first sight of Suarez in Blaugrana actually came in a behind closed doors friendly against an Indonesian U19 XI, and the unflattering photos that dominated the following days media gave more ammunition to those convinced that the deal wasn't for the good of the club.

Clearly unfit, despite scoring Suarez wasn't anything like as sharp as the player we had seen at Liverpool and then in Brazil during the summer.

By the time of his debut at the Santiago Bernabeu at the end of October, the knives were already out.

Neymar double in five goals thriller sends Barca into semi-finals

Madrid: Neymar bagged a double as Barcelona twice came from behind to book their place in the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey with a 3-2 win over nine-man Atletico Madrid to seal a 4-2 aggregate victory on Wednesday.

Fernando Torres struck for the hosts inside the first minute to cancel out Lionel Messi's winner in last week's first leg, but Neymar grabbed a vital away goal just nine minutes later.

Raul Garcia briefly restored Atletico's lead from the penalty spot, but Barca were in front by half-time thanks to a Miranda own goal and a wonderful counter-attack rounded off by Neymar.

Atletico captain Gabi was then sent-off during half-time as players and coaches from both sides clashed at the end of the first period.

The home side should have been reduced to nine men earlier when Arda Turan somehow escaped with just a yellow card after throwing his boot at one of the officials in the second-half, but did eventually see another red card when Mario Suarez picked up a second booking late on.

"I liked the way the team reacted after conceding in a strange way in the first minute," said Barca boss Luis Enrique.

TER STEGEN HELPS BARCA REACH THE SEMIS

Marc-André Ter Stegen, who is Claudio Bravo’s understudy in La Liga, started Barcelona’s Spanish Cup quarter-final second-leg tie against Athletico Madrid and helped them reach the semi-finals. The 22-year-old former Gladbach goalkeeper had to pick the ball out of the net just seconds into the game; Fernando Torres opened the scoring inside the first minute. Barca were level soon after, thanks to Brazilian superstar Neymar (9’).

The game at the Estadio Vicente Calderon exploded into life before the interval: Raul Garcia (30’) scored from the spot to give Athletico the lead, but an own-goal from Miranda (38’) and Neymar’s second (31’) meant that Barca led 3-2 at the break (4-2 on aggregate). During the interval Gabi, Athletico’s captain, was sent off.

Barca closed the game out after the break. Athletico finised with nine men as a result of Mario Suarez picking up his second yellow card. Ter Stegen and Barcelona will face Villarreal or Getafe in the semi-final.

Amor defends La Masia criticism

Former Barcelona player Guillermo Amor has defended the club’s La Masia academy, saying it does great work and helps youngsters.

The 47-year-old played for Barca between 1988 and 1998 and, after retiring, served a four-year spell with the club when Joan Laporta was named President in 2003, being responsible for the youth categories.

However, he left after the board of directors decided not to renew his contract but returned in July 2010 as technical director of training, before being appointed technical director of Adelaide United last summer.

Speaking to the ‘Al Primer Toque’ radio show, he spoke of his role with the Catalans in the wake of the transfer ban imposed on the club by FIFA.

“I feel bad so much damage has been done to Barca, a club that does everything to ensure young players don’t lack anything,” insisted Amor.

“The saddest thing is that nobody knows who made the complaint and it doesn’t seem fair. All the dedication towards these kids for so many years, worrying over their families...

“But at Barca it will continue as it has done. The mission has always been to find talent around the world and bring them to La Masia. Nobody has ever put a gun to anyone’s head.

“Usually they are families who want to come, some even offer to do so. It’s not fair there are players who have spent years in Catalonia and now have to return to the country they came from.

“Many clubs have acted, and are acting, in the same way. But it’s Barca that has paid the price. If someone accuses you of something you like to know who it is because maybe you have a problem.”

Amor says he fails to see a solution to the matter and regrets not having done more at the time.

“The only way to solve it is to get on a plane the very next day and speak to [FIFA President] Sepp Blatter and ask him what happened, ask for forgiveness, return the players to their homes, fix it and find a way for them to play again,” he argued.

Lionel Messi, Luis Enrique argued in Barcelona training, says Mathieu

Barcelona star Lionel Messi and coach Luis Enrique had an argument on the club's training ground earlier this month but the pair quickly made up afterwards, according to Barca defender Jeremy Mathieu.

Messi and his coach has been the subject of intense media speculation in recent weeks, with various figures at the club regularly denying reports of tension in their relationship.

Mathieu, 31, who moved to the Camp Nou last summer, revealed the pair had exchanged angry words just after the turn of the year.

"It was when we got back from holiday," Mathieu said to RMC of the incident that occurred at the La Liga club's training centre on Jan. 2. "Suddenly, for a foul that wasn't given, 'Leo' blew his top. Things got tense, they said a few things to each other.

"The coach came to speak to him in the dressing room afterwards and that's that. It happens at every club, but because it's Barcelona, it's made out to be a huge thing. That's the problem."

Neymar and Messi keep cool as Atletico lose theirs

COMMENT: Gabi and Mario Suarez were sent off, while Arda Turan faces a ban for throwing a boot at the assistant referee in what was anything but a magnanimous loss

By Ben Hayward | Spanish Football Writer

The moment summed up the evening's events. Atletico Madrid's recent signing Cani clipped Lionel Messi's legs with a cynical foul and the Vicente Calderon crowd called for more: "Otra, otra, otra!"

Atletico were playing with nine men by that point in a crazy Copa clash. Gabi was sent off at half-time for furiously protesting some of the refereeing decisions, while Mario Suarez joined him after seeing a second booking for scything down Messi.

That was merely the tip of the iceberg. Earlier, Raul Garcia had been booked for a brutal foul on Jordi Alba and came close to a dismissal later on. And, in what was the worst offence of the lot, Arda Turan could be in big trouble after a bizarre incident in which he removed his boot and threw it at the assistant referee.

Turan missed the official. By that point, Atletico had missed the boat, losing their lead and their composure in a hectic spell at the Vicente Calderon.

Diego Simeone says his players should play "with a knife between the teeth". In this match, however, they ended up cutting themselves - and the punishment was bordering on self-harm.

Through it all, the coach himself was right behind his players, embracing Arda as he came off before shaking the hand of Mario Suarez as the latter left the pitch in disgrace.

The tie was long over by then, though. It had all seemed so different when Fernando Torres gave the home side a dream start with a great goal in the first minute - just as he had done against Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu in the previous round.

But Neymar hit back after nine minutes and, even though Raul Garcia restored Atleti's lead from the spot following a dreadful decision as Javier Mascherano was penalised for a foul outside the box, an own goal from Joao Miranda levelled the scores and Neymar made it 3-2 on the night (and 4-2 on aggregate) when he capped off a move superbly started by Messi's shimmy and glorious pass to pick out the advancing Alba.

Moments earlier, however, Alba was fortunate not to concede a penalty after he handled Antoine Griezmann's drive and Barca subsequently scored at the other end. Tensions boiled at the break and Gabi was shown the red card for protesting to the referee.

"I only told the referee it was a penalty and a red card," the Atleti captain claimed afterwards. "And that he should have more personality." In more colourful language, presumably.

The second half was a much tighter affair, but Atleti's hopes were all but over with 10 men. Further indiscipline ensued as Turan evoked memories of the Iraqi man who tossed a shoe at George Bush, before Mario Suarez was sent off.

"You have to know how to win and you have to know how to lose," Sergio Busquets said of Atleti's antics after the game.

And Luis Enrique explained: "The match got ugly and I took off Neymar (who was targeted by Atleti's players) to stop things from heating up even more. Professionals need to be intelligent with their fellow pros.

" For his part, Simeone said: "In the second half we played with no aspirations. We played without risk and to stop them from scoring.

" And asked if his team could have come back with 11 players still on the pitch, he replied: "Yes. The game was over after the first half.

" For that, however, they had only themselves to blame. For so long, this Atleti team have been playing on the edge. On Wednesday, they pushed themselves over the precipice - and it was anything but a dignified defeat.

Luis Enrique: I loved everything about Barcelona against Atletico

The Blaugrana boss was thrilled with the way in which his side responded to the concession of an early goal at the Vicente Calderon and their control of the second half

Barcelona coach Luis Enrique lavished praise on his players after they booked their place in the Copa del Rey semi-finals with a dramatic win over Atletico Madrid on Wednesday night.

The Catalans led 1-0 from the first leg at Camp Nou but Fernando Torres levelled the tie on aggregate after less than 60 seconds of play at the Vicente Calderon.

Neymar equalised only to see Raul Garcia make it 2-1 from the penalty spot. However, Barca booked their place in the last four with a Miranda own goal and another Neymar strike just before the break.

Atletico subsequently saw Gabi and Mario Suarez sent off, while Arda Turan was booked for hurling his boot apparently towards a linesman as Diego Simeone's side lost their discipline.

However, Luis Enrique did not want to be drawn on the numerous controversial incidents during the game, preferring instead to salute his team's character.

"I liked everything about my team, especially the way in which they recovered from a strange situation at the begining of the match when we went 1-0 down after a minute," the Barca boss told reporters after the game.

"Atleti are an amazing team and they are doing a great job, winning titles in a great way, while the pitch was in very bad condition. The ball was bouncing around the place like a rabbit!

"I don't know if that's down to the weather but my team adapted to the conditions and I'm very happy with the performance.

"I loved the second half. We had a lot of control."

Luis Enrique also singled two-goal hero Neymar out for special praise after an inspired performance.

"Neymar gives us a lot," the former Spain international added.

"He scores, dribbles, he's brave - he played a great game.

" Barca will now face Villarreal or Getafe in the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey.

Possible line-ups Atletico-Barcelona

'To be the best, you play the best'

Diego Simeone insists Atletico Madrid are not daunted by their Copa del Rey quarter-final second leg with Barcelona on Wednesday.

Los Colchoneros face the inenviable task of turning around their tie with the Catalans if they plan to reach the last four, but El Cholo says his players are keen to prove their worth against established heavyweights.

“The truth is that fans know what it's like at the Calderon. I don't feel the need to elaborate on that,” he said at a Press conference.

“We must try to avoid the situations which Barca hurt us with in recent matches.

“We envision a game like the ones we play at home, playing as it suits us.

“From there, we'll see what we get. We'll seek the game we want to find. Hopefully, we can do it.

“Barcelona historically have a football philosophy, which hasn't changed.

“They've put [Lionel] Messi out on the right to give [Luis] Suarez more of a reference in the centre.

“It's the only change they might make. If they play well then Messi has to stay on the right.

“It's different [to last season] because of our players, and some of them are different.

“That was the Champions League, this is the Copa del Rey. The atmosphere will be very nice.

“I've found [playing Real] Madrid and Barcelona equally great because they make you better as a team.

“We always say that playing them puts you closer to them. We welcome it. Playing the best makes you better.”

Atletico Madrid - Barcelona Betting: Why backing Lionel Messi to score offers unmissable value

Our man in Spain, Phil Kitromilides, has taken a look at the goalscorers market for tonight's Copa del Rey clash and thinks the price for Messi to score at anytime is appealing Things are pretty straight forward for Atletico Madrid this evening; fail to score and they are out of the Copa del Rey. The situation is similarly simple for Barcelona in that the Catalans know even one goal would give them a great chance of progressing, leading as they are 1-0 from the first leg. So goals are necessary tonight for both sides and the array of attacking talent on display should mean we get a few at the Vicente Calderon.
Leading the betting for the hosts is Mario Mandzukic at 13/2 (6.50) with Paddy Power to open the scoring and at 9/4 (3.25) to socre at anytime while Fernando Torres is available at 12/5 (3.40) to score at anytime although it is the Croatian who is more likely to start the game. Atleti's most gifted forward player, however, is Antoine Griezmann and the Frenchman is their top scorer with 10 La Liga goals. He is offered at 11/4 (3.75) to net at anytime and that would seem to offer some value for those looking to back one of the Rojiblancos to get on the scoresheet. But the best bet this evening is also the simplest. Lionel Messi has been in sensational form since the start of the year and has scored in each of the last five matches notching eight goals in the process.
He was the match-winner from the penalty spot in last week's first leg at the Camp Nou, as well as scoring when the two sides met in La Liga just over two weeks ago and is offered at a hugely eyecatching price of 13/10 (2.30) to score at anytime. Barcelona have been playing some excellent attacking football in recent weeks scoring 23 goals in their last six games, and Messi has been at the hub of this attacking force. The price of 13/10 (2.30) for him to score a goal is close to as big as you will find in any match all season and while others might be tempted by the slightly bigger odds of 17/10 (2.70) for Neymar to find the back of the net, investing in Messi is a wise decision.

Barcelona boss Luis Enrique hopes Atletico Madrid play fair

Barcelona head coach Luis Enrique insists his sole focus will be on the second leg of the club's quarter-final with Atletico Madrid on Wednesday.

Barcelona coach Luis Enrique says he hopes his side's Copa del Rey quarterfinal second leg at Atletico Madrid on Wednesday evening to "stay within the sporting rules.

" Barca visited the Estadio Vicente Calderon three times during Gerardo Martino's reign last season, drawing in the Supercopa and La Liga, and being beaten 1-0 in the Champions League quarterfinal second leg as Atletico progressed amid a heated atmosphere on and off the pitch.

The teams have met twice this season, both at the Camp Nou, and Barca have won both -- including last week's 1-0 first-leg win -- but the Calderon may make life more difficult.

Luis Enrique told a news conference that he was aware of Atletico's reputation but hoped there would not be excessive aggression.

"I saw all the games from last season, and they have been analysed," Luis Enrique said. "I expect the typical characteristics of Atletico, even more as they are playing at home. I expect a very hard version. I would like the game to stay within the sporting rules. I would like it to be a good spectacle.

" With Atletico having eliminated Real Madrid in the previous round, Barcelona would be overwhelming favourites to win the trophy if they were to reach the semifinals.

However, Luis Enrique said: "That view might be held outside the dressing room, but if we think that way ourselves we would be mistaken. Of the three big teams only one will remain, but we cannot get overconfident."

Lionel Messi scored the only goal as Barcelona won the first leg against Atletico.

Lionel Messi, who was superb in Barca's 3-1 La Liga win over Atletico on Jan. 11 and scored the winner in last week's first leg, looks likely to again be positioned on the right of the front three, with Luis Suarez at centre-forward.

"It changes, and where Leo plays depends a lot on the opponent," Luis Enrique said. "Sometimes we prefer for him to be outside. He brings everything for us, and wherever he plays is the basis of our play.

" Atletico's new attacking star Antoine Griezmann has recently started to show the form that persuaded his club to pay 30 million euros to sign him from Real Sociedad in the summer.

The France international told Marca that to turn the tie around, his side must take advantage of a loud Calderon atmosphere, create chances and be "strong."

"With the support of our fans, we will try to go through," he said. "We must create more chances and score. If we did not believe we could turn it around, we would not take to the pitch.

"It will be a tough game, but very nice. We will give everything to go through. We will try to give our best, each one of us, and be strong

." The visitors are close to full-strength for the encounter, with versatile defender Jeremy Mathieu having returned to the match squad after recovering from his recent Achilles tendon issue. The France international is likely to be on the bench, though, with Luis Enrique sticking closely to the more settled lineup that has helped Barca return to top form recently.

Atletico will be without three important players for the game, with centre-back Diego Godin suspended, and midfield duo Koke and Tiago both left out of the squad due to injury.
